southbank ledge

London,England

Steeped in history on the Queens Walk in central London lies the Southbank Undercroft, the mecca of UK street skateboarding and one of the oldest continually skated spots in the world.

Working alongside Long Live Southbank and Nike SB in 2023-4, Betongpark designed and installed the new granite ledge, placed in the restored area of the Undercroft that was closed in 2005 and reopened in 2019.

A single 3m x 1.6m piece of Spanish granite was craned into place above a concrete footing using timber board mark finish to match the surrounding brutalist building complex.

This block is lit and under cover 24/7 to serve ledge technicians in all seasons and times of the day.

Having first been used by skaters in 1973 after opening in 1967, The Undercroft came under threat in 2013 and - after a long battle with Southbank Centre – the space´s long term future was guaranteed in 2014. Fast forward to 2017 and planning permission was granted for an extension of sections of the little banks and ledge which was completed in 2019, when talks of a new ledge begun…

5 years later and stemming from a long running friendship between Betongpark and Long Live Southbank, we were pleased to assist in delivering this ledge to the esteemed Undercroft.
